Nicole's Blog Entry

Ever since I began to draw and immerse myself in the art world, I have always been really into simplicity. In film, music, the internet and all different types of art, I can always see the interest in something as simple as a portrait. In my personal work, I have done numerous self portraits and portraits of friends and family. One of my favorite photographers, Gage Young, has inspired me with my own artwork, whether it be drawing or photography.

Gage does a lot of work with some of my favorite band’s promo pictures as well as many portraits. He has also done many with the homeless. These photos are amazing! They are the simplest compositions, but he does such a great job capturing the personalities of each person. These images help me to strive for that same thing in my own work. If you can get that emotional element in there, the piece is even better.

Here’s a link to one of these photos!...if you have time, check out some of his other work!

  1. Wow, you're right Nicole. Gage does an amazing job at capturing personalities and emotions with simple compositions. The photo of David was stellar, I loved the color of his eyes complimented by his green head band. I also really loved the caution-tape guy, just because he made me smile :)

  2. It seems as if he pays particular attention to the way people stand and move in such a way that makes his photographs unique and brings out the subject's inner personality. I like his photos, thanks for sharing

  3. I'm glad you introduced us to this photographer! His photos are really stunning. I agree that he is really good at capturing the most intense moments. It definitely seems like the emotional element is the most important part in any art form which is what makes these photos so beauitful.

  4. (Brandon R)I've seen some of these in the strobist flickr group. His mastery of light is very impressive: maybe a bit of a nod to the Dutch masters. I read his profile and he is crazy young. Is this guy a friend of yours or just a random discovery?

  6. Youre right... I checked out some of Gage's pic's and I must agree that they are pretty sweet. I like the specific picture the link took us to (the man with the green eyes) the composition, although simple enough gives the viewer a sense of the mans life just by looking at the pic. Awesome stuff

  7. (Emily N.) I think it’s really great that you found something that inspires you in your own pieces. Like others I haven’t heard of Gage Young, but I’m glad you introduced me into his work. One thing I enjoy about his portraits is that he takes photos of veracity and of the real world. You can see the emotion coming through the images and it captures the viewer.
